IN CONVERSATION|ANDREW KOHAGEN
Name|Andrew Kohagen
Age|23
Hometown|Minneapolis, Minnesota
How did you get discovered?
Modeling came to me as much as I came to it. I had always wanted to model. I love fashion and I love the way photographers capture a specific moment that creates a mood and an aesthetic for the clothing and the model. I wanted to be a part of that.
What were you doing prior to modeling?
Before modeling, I was in school studying musical theater. I graduated with a bachelor of fine arts in musical theater in May of 2016.
People would be surprised to know that I...
When I was 16 years old, I had to have surgery on my brain and spinal cord. I finished my sophomore year of high school from my bed. It was extremely difficult time of my life but it made me the person I am today. I am stronger and more empathic because of it.
What's your latest obsession?
I've recently been obsessed with the new HBO show, WestWorld. I regularly watched it every sunday night. The storyline is so smart and the acting is superb.
Your most price possession:
I have a bracelet that I own that I bought two summers ago. During that summer, I was working at a theater in California doing three different shows in REP. It was one of the craziest, busiest but insanely fun summers of my life. The friendship and love developed that summer will last a lifetime. When I see this bracelet it immediately takes me back to the people I love and several dear memories.
Growing up, who did you look up to as your hero?
I have always looked up to my brother. We are 11 years apart but still incredibly close. Growing up he was simultaneously my best friend and a second father figure. He looked out for me, took care of me, but also always made me laugh. I could always count on him.
When is the last time you said, "I Love You" to someone?
To my family
Three adjectives that best describes you?
Genuine, Loving, Goofy
Describe your personal style:
My style is contemporary and minimalistic. I love neutral colors mixed with one or two things that pop. My friends like to joke with me whenever they see me wear color, as if I've never worn anything other than black in my life.
Your favorite place you have travel to date:
My favorite place is Glacier National Park in Montana. The glacial lakes have this perfect turquoise color as the rest beneath massive mountain peaks. The views are some of the most surreal I have ever seen.
Your favorite film/scene from the film:
Lord Of The Rings—They are cinematic masterpieces. There are endless brilliant moments but there is a scene in the Fellowship between Gandalf and Frodo that is extremely tender and I love that part.
Your favorite book:
My favorite book is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It transports you back to the 1920s by bringing these larger than life characters to life. His ability to capture human emotion, heartbreak is captivating. This mixed with the endless symbolism is what won me over.
If there is a destination from your hometown that you would recommend for us to check out that represent what you are about, where would you take us?
Minneapolis, Minnesota—I would take you to the Blue Door in St. Paul. We would get a Juicy Lucy which is a hamburger with cheese cooked in the center of it, creating a cavern of molten cheese with a side of cheese curds, a Minnesota favorite. After we would go see a play at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. It is one of my favorite theaters both because it produces some of the best theater in the country and because of its stunning architecture.
Who would you like to meet through modeling?
Cara Delevingne. I remember watching one of her interviews after Paper Towns came out. I think she is hilarious. I would love for us to hang out and to discuss her transitions between modeling and acting.
Craziest thing you ever done:
One of my days in California two summers ago. I was with two of my closest friends. We were on a day off and had traveled into San Francisco tour around. We were driving by the Golden Gate Bridge when we decided to pull over and attempt to go down to the beach. We found this beautiful beach surrounded by cliffs. We proceeded to spend the following three hours swimming in the nude and having one of the best afternoons of my life.
Your wish for 2017?
To land a role in a film. Perhaps lead into a Academy Awards nomination? :)
